
The Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers was established on February 25, 1951. The Society’s primary areas of work include academic conferences and exhibitions on naval architecture, ocean engineering, and related equipment; science popularization; editing and publishing; and scientific and technological consulting.
The Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SSNAME) (formerly the Shanghai Society of Shipbuilding Engineering) was established on February 25, 1951. Since 1981, the Society has continuously organized the China International Maritime Technology Conference and Exhibition (Marintec China).
Major Activities of the Society
1. Organizes a large-scale comprehensive annual academic conference, the Shipbuilding Symposium at the Science and Technology Forum of the China International Industry Fair, and dozens of specialized academic events each year;
2. Edits and publishes the Society’s journal *Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering*, proceedings, and translates and publishes the Chinese editions of *Shipbuilder* and *Ship Propulsion*;
3. Organizes a wide variety of science popularization activities centered around the National Science and Technology Activities Week and the Shanghai Science and Technology Festival, attracting tens of thousands of participants annually;
4. Organizes members to provide technical consulting services in various forms;
5. Organizes and hosts large-scale international academic conferences and exhibitions. The China International Maritime Technology Conference and Exhibition (Marintec China), successfully held by the Society since 1981, has become one of the two largest maritime exhibitions in the world and is recognized as a flagship event in Shanghai; The Society has established friendly cooperative relationships with 14 renowned maritime engineering societies overseas. It is a founding member of the Pan-Asian Association of Maritime Engineering Societies (PAAMES) and was elected as the first chair society, successfully hosting the first PAAMES conference in Shanghai in 2004.
The Society enjoys significant academic influence and high recognition within the domestic and international shipbuilding and offshore engineering communities.
International Cooperation
The Society has established friendly cooperative relationships with 14 overseas societies, including the Hong Kong Joint Branch of the Institution of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (INAEM), the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, the Hong Kong Institute of Marine Technology, the Australia-New Zealand Branch of the Institution of Marine Engineers (IME), the Institution of Naval Architects (INA), the Korean Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Institution of Marine Engineers (IME), the East Asia Branch of the Institution of Marine Engineers (IME), the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Mechanical, Marine, Naval, and Chemical Engineering Divisions), the Singapore Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Society of Naval Architects of America, the Taiwan Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the German Society for Maritime Technology, and the Russian Federation Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Technology, among 14 other overseas societies, to carry out bilateral or multilateral exchange activities.
