Tafawa Balewa Square, commonly known as TBS, is one of Lagos’s most historic and iconic public spaces. Historical Background
Named in honor of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first Prime Minister (1960–1966), the square occupies the site of the old Race Course, a colonial-era venue used for horse racing and British military parades. After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, the Race Course was redeveloped into Tafawa Balewa Square to commemorate the nation’s new leadership and symbolize post-independence aspirations.
A defining feature of the square is the Independence Arcade, which consists of seven red gates standing in a row — representing the seven original regions of Nigeria at the time of independence. At the center stands a black marble platform where the Nigerian flag was first raised on October 1, 1960, marking the country’s freedom from British rule.
