History & Milestones

Founded in December 1945 by a group of ten entrepreneurs, UCIMU was established in the post-war era with the ambition of contributing to Italy’s reconstruction through industrial development. In 2025, the association celebrated its 80th anniversary, marking eight decades of supporting Italian manufacturers, safeguarding sector interests, and promoting entrepreneurial culture.

Mission & Core Activities

UCIMU’s mission is to support member companies through specialized consultancy, tangible services, and advocacy, while monitoring global trends shaping the future of manufacturing.

1. Representation & Advocacy

  • Acts as the world ambassador for Italian manufacturing technology, enhancing the visibility of member companies in both traditional and emerging markets.
  • Protects sector interests by maintaining continuous dialogue with national, European, and extra-European institutions on key policy topics.
  • Contributes to regulatory frameworks, such as supporting the implementation of the Industry 4.0 National Plan and the iperammortamento (super-amortization) measure for 4.0 assets.

2. Economic Analysis & Market Intelligence

Operates a dedicated Economic-Statistical tool to help members devise production strategies and optimize industrial policies.

Conducts intense monitoring of general economic and sector trends, producing:

  • Annual sector reports and quarterly order analyses
  • Regular import/export analyses and country/ product data sheets
  • Balance sheet analyses and annual consumption/production data for machine tools, robots, and CNC systems.

3. Innovation & Digitalization

  • Promotes Industry 4.0 adoption, focusing on automation, standardization, security, sustainability, and energy saving.
  • Collaborates with Intesa Sanpaolo to support digitalization and innovation, offering financial solutions covering up to 100% of investments in technological transformation, plus advisory services for open innovation.
  • Supports additive manufacturing through its spin-off cultural association AITA (Associazione Italiana Tecnologie Additive), which connects manufacturers, users, and research centers to explore “third-type machine tools” (3D printing).

4. Skills Development & Education

  • Runs the UCIMU Awards (now in its 47th edition as of 2023) to promote synergy between universities and companies, awarding theses on machine tool design, robotics, automation, and production technologies.
  • Offers skills certification for sector workers (turners, millers, maintenance staff, CAD/CAM designers, etc.) in partnership with Probest Service.
  • Organizes Open Factory events, youth orientation programs, and school meetings to showcase manufacturing careers to students and families.

5. Trade Fairs & Events

  • Promotes BI-MU, Italy’s leading machine tool, robotics, and automation exhibition, held at Fieramilano Rho. The event features dedicated innovation areas: FabbricaFutura (connectivity/software), Robot Planet (industrial robots), BI-MU Additive (3D printing), and BI-MU Logistics (material handling).
  • Supports the UCIMU Foundation, which drives economic/scientific research and cultural initiatives, including the publication “L’industria delle macchine nel mondo che cambia” (The Machine Industry in a Changing World) for its 80th anniversary.
