
Korean Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (KTA, Korean name: 한국터널지하공간학회) is a corporate juristic person (사단법인) in South Korea, dedicated to the research and development of tunnel and underground space technologies.
It was initially approved by the Ministry of Construction on February 5, 1993, with partial revisions in 1998, 2001 and 2011. The association was formally established on October 27, 1992, with its main office located at Room 11, 14th Floor, International Electronic Center, 304 Hyoryeong-ro, Seocho-gu, Seoul (Zip code: 137-728).
Key Business Scope
To achieve its mission, KTA carries out the following core activities:
- Conduct comprehensive R&D on pre-investigation, construction, and maintenance of tunnels and underground spaces, including research on safe construction, safety countermeasures, environmental impact assessment, and environmental protection for related projects.
- Promote the improvement, development and popularization of equipment and materials used in tunnel and underground construction, and research on standardization of design and construction specifications.
- Provide technical guidance, collect and disseminate industry information, and publish academic journals and books.
- Organize research presentations, lectures, training courses, and strengthen cooperation with domestic and international related organizations.
- Offer technical consultation and make policy recommendations to safeguard the rights and interests of tunnel technicians.
Academic Publications
KTA operates two core official publications to disseminate cutting-edge research and industry trends:
- Journal of Korean Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (pISSN: 2233-8292, eISSN: 2287-4747): A bimonthly peer-reviewed journal included in KSCI and KCI databases, publishing high-quality research results and case studies on cost-saving and safety improvement in tunnelling technology and underground space development since 1999.
- Magazine of korean Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (Nature, Tunnel and Underground Space) (pISSN: 2233-7482): A quarterly magazine covering industry news, practical cases and popular science content related to tunnel and underground space fields since 1999.
Core Mission
The association aims to promote the development of tunnel technology through investigation and research on the construction, maintenance and management of tunnels and underground spaces, so as to realize efficient utilization of national land, protection of natural environment, improvement of public welfare, and enhancement of rights and interests of tunnel technicians.
It also serves as the Korean national member of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), and has hosted major international events such as the 2006 World Tunnel Congress with the theme “Safety in the Underground Space” in Seoul, which attracted about 800 representatives from 51 countries.
